Natural gas and LNG converter — MMBtu, MWh, m³ and tonnes

Convert natural gas and LNG quantities and prices between MMBtu, MWh, GJ, therms, cubic metres, cubic feet and tonnes of LNG, and compare Henry Hub with European and Asian prices in €/MWh and $/MMBtu. Henry Hub at $2.76 per MMBtu on 27 October 2026 is about €8.43 per MWh at the ECB rate.

Defaults: 38.4 MJ per standard cubic metre (typical pipeline gas), 52 MMBtu per tonne of LNG, 1 tonne LNG ≈ 2.22 m³ liquid ≈ 1,380 m³ gas. ECB rates of 30 October 2026.

  • 1 MWh = 3.412 MMBtu = 3.6 GJEnergy: 1 MMBtu = 1.055 GJ = 0.293 MWh = 10 therms.
  • 1 m³ gas ≈ 38.4 MJ ≈ 0.0364 MMBtuDepends on gas quality (gross calorific value): 36–41 MJ/m³ is the usual range. Adjust the field for your contract’s GCV.
  • 1 t LNG ≈ 52 MMBtu ≈ 1,380 m³ gasAlso about 2.22 m³ of liquid; a 174,000 m³ LNG carrier carries roughly 78,000 tonnes or 3.9 million MMBtu.
  • €/MWh = $/MMBtu × 3.412 × EUR/USDHow TTF (quoted in €/MWh) is compared with Henry Hub and JKM (quoted in $/MMBtu). Daily ECB rate.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

How do I convert $/MMBtu to €/MWh?

Multiply by 3.412 and by the EUR/USD rate: Henry Hub at $2.76 per MMBtu is about €8.43 per MWh at the ECB rate of 30 October 2026. TTF is quoted in €/MWh, so this is the figure to compare.

How many MMBtu are in a tonne of LNG?

About 51 to 53 MMBtu depending on composition; 52 is a common contract assumption. One million tonnes a year (mtpa) of LNG is roughly 48 to 52 trillion Btu, or 1.38 billion cubic metres of gas.

What is a therm?

A UK and US retail unit: 100,000 Btu, so 10 therms make one MMBtu. UK NBP gas is quoted in pence per therm.
