Crack spread calculator — 3-2-1, 2-1-1 and Brent–WTI spread

Calculate the 3-2-1, 2-1-1 and single-product crack spreads from any crude and product prices, and read a year of daily history. On 27 October 2026 the 3-2-1 crack against Brent was $21.45 per barrel (gasoline $118.40, diesel $196.85, Brent $123.10); the Brent–WTI spread was $19.73.

Defaults are the latest EIA daily spot assessments (27 October 2026): Brent, WTI, New York Harbor gasoline and ULSD diesel.

Method

How it is calculated

Formulas

  • 3-2-1 = (2 × gasoline + 1 × diesel − 3 × crude) / 3Gross margin per barrel of crude for a refinery yielding two barrels of gasoline and one of diesel from three barrels of crude. Product prices in $/gal are multiplied by 42.
  • 2-1-1 = (gasoline + diesel − 2 × crude) / 2Used where the diesel yield is higher, typical of European and Asian refineries.
  • Gasoline crack = gasoline − crudeSingle-product spreads show which product is driving the margin; on 27 October 2026 the diesel crack vs Brent was $73.75 and the gasoline crack −$4.70.
  • Brent − WTIThe spread between the two main crude benchmarks; it reflects the cost of moving US crude to the coast and the relative balance of the Atlantic Basin.

FAQ

Questions about this tool

What is a crack spread?

The difference between the value of refined products and the cost of the crude oil they are made from, per barrel. It is the market’s rough measure of a refinery’s gross margin before operating costs, energy and losses.

What is a good 3-2-1 crack spread?

Historically US 3-2-1 cracks have averaged roughly $15 to $25 per barrel, with spikes above $40 in 2022 and during the 2026 diesel squeeze. The value depends on which crude and product benchmarks are used, so compare like with like.

Why is the diesel crack higher than gasoline?

Since 2022 middle-distillate supply has been tighter than gasoline: lower Russian exports, refinery closures in Europe and the US, and strong demand from shipping and industry. The tool shows both single-product cracks so the gap is visible.

Which prices does the tool use by default?

The latest EIA daily spot assessments: Europe Brent, Cushing WTI, New York Harbor conventional gasoline and New York Harbor ULSD diesel. You can overwrite any field with your own quotes, including European prices per tonne.
