How high are diesel and petrol prices in France in 2026?
Diesel is France's most widely used road fuel, and it has risen most [6]. The monthly average was €1.65 a litre in January, based on the national statistics office (Insee) series compiled by prix-carburant.eu [1]. It jumped to €2.06 in March and €2.26 in April, after the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February [1,4]. In the first three days of March alone, the national average rose from €1.721 to €1.787 [19].

Prices eased in early summer, then climbed again. Diesel set a record of €2.38 on 8 April and a new high of €2.39 on 18 September [4]. Économie Matin based these figures on data from more than 9,000 stations [4]. October averaged €2.370, against €2.343 in September [2]. On 30 October the national average was €2.390 for diesel and €2.117 for SP95-E10, the best-selling petrol [2].
For comparison, diesel averaged €1.64 in 2025 and €1.86 in 2022, the year of Russia's invasion of Ukraine [1]. Économie Matin notes that SP95-E10 reached €2.17 in September, above its June 2022 peak of €2.11 [4].
Why do prices differ, and why are some stations short?
Regional gaps are modest. On 21 October diesel cost €2.410 in Grand Est and €2.340 in Brittany, Carbuprix reported; Corsica was cheapest at €2.284 [3]. Gaps between stations in the same town are often larger than those between regions [3].
Shortages have been a recurring issue. In mid-September about 9% of stations lacked at least one fuel, according to government figures cited by The Connexion [5]. The energy ministry said 90.8% of stations with shortages belonged to TotalEnergies, which capped its prices at €1.99 for petrol and €2.25 for diesel [5]. On 30 October, mon-carburant.com reported that 16.8% of stations were signalling a shortage [2]. On 24 September the government temporarily lifted weekend driving bans for lorries supplying service stations [20].
What has the government done: the €450m package and €100 payments?
Paris has chosen targeted aid over a general tax cut. A first €50 million package for the worst-hit sectors came in late March [12]. On 22 September Finance Minister Roland Lescure announced a wider package [7]. Budget Minister David Amiel said it would cost €450 million, bringing the total to €1.4 billion [7].
The main measure is a €100 payment for workers on modest incomes who drive long distances. Eligibility now covers round trips to work of more than 30 kilometres, or more than 8,000 kilometres a year for work [8]. That makes 5.5 million people eligible, up from 3 million [7,8]. Fuel subsidies for farmers, fishers and construction firms were extended to the end of the year [8]. Energy vouchers of €48 to €277 for 5.8 million families were brought forward by three months [8]. Fishers can receive aid covering up to 70% of cost increases, plus zero-interest loans [7].
The government has also set a rule that surplus VAT and excise revenue from higher prices funds support schemes [9]. Employer aid of up to €1,000 for staff who drive to work is tax-free [9].
Ministers have rejected a broad cut. Lescure said cutting fuel taxes by 10 cents a litre for everyone would cost about €3 billion a year [4]. He said that was not possible with a 2026 public deficit forecast at 5.4% [4].
Supply measures followed in October. France released 10 million barrels of diesel from its reserves, the presidency said [10]. It aims to cut prices by 12 to 18 cents a litre from November [10]. President Emmanuel Macron began a Gulf tour on 19 October [11]. France now has diesel commitments of 295,000 tonnes a month from Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain [10]. Sales go through TotalEnergies, whose chief executive Patrick Pouyanné said France has "a diesel deficit, as we are a major importer" [11].
Who has protested in France in 2026?
- Hauliers, March–April. About 200 lorries held a go-slow on the Paris ring road on 30 March [12]. Further actions took place in Nantes, near Lyon and in Clermont-Ferrand [12]. The OTRE hauliers' organisation suspended its actions on 1 April after "significant" progress in talks [13].
- Corsican fishers, April. A fishers' union blockaded six Corsican ports from 7 April, saying government aid was not enough [14].
- Mediterranean fishers, September. Fishers blocked ports including Nice and Grau-du-Roi, and the Frontignan fuel depot [5]. They agreed on 17 September to lift the blockades after a meeting with Fisheries Minister Catherine Chabaud [6]. The prime minister had raised their fuel aid to 35 cents a litre the day before [6].
- National marches, October. Protests that began over school conditions widened to living costs and fuel prices [15]. On 17 October the interior minister counted 550,000 marchers, and organisers 800,000 [15]. About 1,800 people were arrested and Limoges town hall was set on fire [15]. On 24 October the ministry counted 410,000, including 110,000 in Paris; the organising union claimed 800,000 [16].

What are the parties proposing?
Fuel prices are a central issue before the April 2027 presidential election, France 24 reports [17]. Opposition parties have set out different options, according to Économie Matin [4]. La France Insoumise proposes a price freeze. The National Rally (RN) wants a VAT cut on fuel. Les Républicains favour a temporary cut in the TICPE, the main excise duty on fuel [4]. France 24 says Marine Le Pen's VAT proposal has drawn broad public support [17].
Supporters of targeting include National Assembly president Yaël Braun-Pivet, who said targeted aid costs "hundreds of millions rather than tens of billions" [5]. Macron acknowledged the "legitimate demands" of protesters while condemning those who looted [17].
How does 2026 compare with the gilets jaunes of 2018?
The yellow vest (gilets jaunes) movement of 2018 began over fuel tax rises [18]. On its first day, 17 November 2018, the interior ministry estimated about 244,000 protesters [18]. AFP notes the difference in cause. In 2018 a carbon tax increase triggered the movement; in 2026 the government stresses external causes linked to the war [6].
The 2026 marches have been larger by official counts, but their demands are broader. The mobilisation has expanded to wages, pensions and public services as well as fuel [15]. A barometer cited by AFP found 17 million adults, or 37% of the adult population, in "mobility precarity" in 2026 [6].
What to watch
- Reserve release. The presidency expects 12 to 18 cents a litre off diesel from November [10].
- Gulf supplies. Pouyanné said the Saudi commitment aims to secure supplies beyond November [11].
- Aid deadlines. The €100 payments and sector subsidies run to the end of December [8].
- Further protests. The Connexion reports new protests planned for 31 October [15]. Official and organiser counts have differed widely [16].
- Diesel markets. European diesel was trading near $200 a barrel on 20 October, against about $80 at the start of 2026 [11].
Alupetra publishes daily diesel, gasoil and crude price coverage; French pump prices follow those wholesale markets with a lag of days to weeks.
